Community Partnership & Social Justice

At our January program, Rose Chivens and Sarah Nelson gave an engaging presentation detailing the origins, progress, and future aspirations of the Marquette County West End Youth Center. Their talk offered insight into the center’s journey and highlighted its growing impact on local youth.

The story of the center began in 2021, following a tragic youth suicide in the community. Motivated by her passion for suicide prevention, Rose Chivens sought ways to address the underlying mental health crisis affecting local young people. She discovered that area youth had few options for recreation or connection—no dedicated place to expend energy, have fun, or cultivate friendships. For many, traveling to Marquette was not feasible due to transportation challenges, and most existing activities were beyond the financial reach of families. The community urgently needed a safe, welcoming space where young people could share their thoughts, concerns, and experiences, especially as they navigated pain, fears, or grief.

Partnering with the local 4-H club, the center provides that safe after-school space with homework help and tutoring as well as fun activities and programs.  Several fundraising events and sales have been held to sustain the current program, but the team envisions exciting developments.

One plan involves purchasing an unused elementary school to create a stand-alone center with ample space for physical activities, study areas for homework assistance, rooms for arts and crafts, and comfortable spots for youth to relax and build friendships. Although a recent grant application was denied, the dream remains alive, fueled by the dedication of the staff and volunteers.

Another vision for the future is the creation of a student-run business, which would provide youth with a sense of purpose, employment opportunities, and valuable business experience. Currently, there is hope to acquire the Butler Theater in Ishpeming, which is for sale. With the help of a benefactor to secure financing, the plan is to renovate the building and have it operated as a community theater by West End Youth Center students.

These ambitious goals underscore the importance of continued community involvement. The center’s progress and positive outcomes are made possible by the generosity and commitment of local businesses, organizations, volunteers, and families. Together, they will build a brighter future for the youth of Marquette County’s West End.
